Riding bikes is wonderful exercise and a great family
activity. But bikes can be awkward to store at home. They take up lots of space,
usually in an already full garage. Yet if you don't store bikes somewhere
convenient to access then family members aren't likely to use them as often. Or
if you have children, they will need your help more often than not in retrieving
their bicycle.
♦So to organize bikes, you need a convenient and secure
storage space not in everyone's way. And you need some type of bike storage rack
or bike stand. Yes, you can stand bikes on their kick stands but this consumes
more space in your already too small garage or storage shed and the bike easily
tips over when someone bumps into it too hard.
♦When buying
bike racks for your home, think about things such as how many bikes your family
has, the bike size, who needs to access the bikes and how often as well as stuff
like the age and height of the bicycle owner. Then you'll know which bike stand
or bike rack will work best for your bike storage needs.
♦For instance, if you have a bunch of bike-riding young
children (and perhaps their friends too) who like to use their bikes frequently, then consider a bike rack like
you might see on the playground or at school, only smaller. The
Bike Storage & Accessory Rack
to the left
is from Organize-Everything and holds six bikes upright plus it has top
accessory hooks to store your children's bicycle helmets. A child of any age or
height can easily push their bike into the stand without assistance. You could
put the rack against a wall in your garage well beyond where it will be in the
way of your cars.
♦Similar in concept, Stacks and Stacks
also sells a rack that will hold bikes upright
side-by-side. The
Bicycle Stand - 2 Bike Storage System
holds two bikes in a small space upright without the usage
of their kickstand. Or take a look at this one, also from Stacks and Stacks and
for parking two bikes upright and adjacent to each other:

♦But if you only have adult family
members who ride bikes, perhaps less frequently too, then you could utilize
overhead bike rack storage. Overhead storage is less accessible to children
which is why it's best for strong adults. But if you're not a "strong" adult,
consider this
Bike Hoist - Ceiling Bike Lift
storage system from Organize-Everything.
♦Another good option for adult bikes is to store them two in a column against or
near the wall. That way you're doubling your storage in a compact space. The
Gravity Bike Rack-Deluxe Wall Bike Rack
doesn't even need any installation. Just do a few adjustments to its arms to
keep your bikes level and you can
store two bikes on it, one above the other.
♦Finally, if it's just you storing your bike, or you have just one child who
needs bike storage, and you like the idea mentioned
earlier in the children's multi bike rack where you just walk your bike in and
park it upright (but not necessarily using the kickstand), you can do that. Stores sell a
lot of single bike racks or bike stands that fit any size bike such as the
The Grandstand™ Bike Rack
below from Organize-Everything.
It's lightweight. Move it around as you reorganize your garage or even bring it
with you on trips. If you have several children who store their bikes in
different areas of your home or garage, then each can have their own single bike
rack.
