Your goal is to clear the center of the garage so you can
walk through it.
♦First,
sort everything in the garage into four piles: trash; charity donations; items
to remain there; and items belonging elsewhere.
♦Trash Items:
Trash includes any item in your garage that you have not used in years
and that does
not hold any useful or worthy sentimental value. And if it's broken, most
definitely trash it. You will not fix it later.
♦Charity Items:
Donate items to charity that aren't broken but are in too
good of shape to trash and can be used by someone else.
♦Remaining Items:
Use garage storage and organization products for items that
are to remain in the garage. For instance, put items on plastic wire wall
shelves or free-standing metal shelving (approximately $12 each for the least
expensive metal ones, lots more if you want something more stylish). You'll
find such garage storage &
organization products at stores ranging from
your typical super discount retailer to
you super home improvement stores.
If you like to use plastic storage containers, put them on individual shelves
so you can get to one without moving others (versus stacking them in columns or
piles on the floor). For example, the "box
and bin warehouse storage system" is one such shelving unit that allows you to retrieve
a box without disturbing the remaining boxes.
You can mount the bin warehouse to the wall for
stability. It can hold cardboard boxes or plastic bins and it holds a lot of weight, such
as up to 18 gallon storage boxes per slot. It'll hold 1,000 lbs. total. If
you've ever moved one plastic bin or box after another to get to the one on the
bottom, then you'll understand what a back-saver, space-saver and convenience
such a shelving system like this can be through the years (because it will last
you many years if not a lifetime).
♦Borrowed Items:
Return items belonging elsewhere to your interior rooms or to
the person from whom you borrowed them.
♦Bonus Tip:
Place riding mowers and children's riding toys in parking
spaces in the garage outlined on the floor with masking tape. Many stores also sell single and
multi-bike stands, also called bike racks. They offer you another opportunity to
create a designated parking spot for the family's bikes in the garage.
♦Once you master garage storage organization, you should be
able to park the car in it (or at least the riding mower).
