Keep hand tools such as screwdrivers, hammers and pliers
handy and organized.
♦Store similar tools together. For instance, keep all
screwdrivers in one container or section.
♦Cluster different categories of tools that you might use
together near each other. For instance, put the container of screwdrivers next
to the assortment of hammers. Almost every assembly job uses the two items.
♦Make an outline (such as with tape or a permanent marker) of
the tool (its "shadow") or label
the spot (with a labelmaker) where you store each tool, whether it's on a wall
mounted pegboard system or on a shelf. You may even want to get specific with the
label, such as listing the exact size or type of tool. Outlining and/or labeling the
tool layout storage system
lets all family members know what goes where. Also, you can see at a
glance if a tool is missing or in the wrong spot. [Pictured:

♦Unless you only have a small kit of tools, don't keep your
tools in your old-fashioned
jumbo portable tool box. Instead keep them on the
tool racks, peg board systems and shelves. But keep an empty,
small to medium size tool box
right along side them.
♦Then when you have an assembly or repair job, just select
your tools for the job from their permanent storage spaces and add them to the
portable tool box. This will make it easier for you to carry the tools around
the house. When you're done with your job, empty the tool box and put the tools
and the empty portable tool box back on the shelf in its place.
