♦First, choose whatever size junk drawer that you'd like but
put dividers in it such as makeshift cardboard dividers. Use small rectangular
trays (metal or plastic), bowls, or tins without the lids to hold and group
stuff.
♦If your junk drawer is full of smaller items, a ready-made
junk drawer organizer tray might work for you. Organize.com sells a
Junk Drawer Organizer
(pictured
to the left) that comes with
more than half a dozen compartments. It expands from 9" to 16" to fit
your drawer size.
♦Organize.com
also sells a
Wood Junk Drawer Organizer
that
has a white washable bottom lining.
♦And
Organize.com sells a
Sliding Junk Drawer Organizer
that
has 13 compartments in its bottom tray and a top sliding tray with nine more
compartments--so it's actually two levels.
♦These are
also great drawer trays for holding and separating small office supplies and
small craft supplies.
♦Make a rule that when the drawer gets full, you can't move to
another drawer. If you want to add an item to a full junk drawer, then you must
throw out an item that's already in the drawer. This is your chance to be messy,
BUT contained messy.
♦Assign each family member
their own junk drawer. A storage cart or storage chest on wheels with four or five drawers is
perfect. Label the outside of each drawer with the owner's name. Or tape their
photograph to the front of the drawer. Or hang a stringed label from the
handle with the drawer "owner's" name.
